Alex Katz

The Museum of Fine Arts’ current exhibit “Alex Katz Prints” includes 125 pieces by celebrated artist Alex Katz. The works cover almost fifty years of the career of, as Boston Globe’s Mark Feeney describes him, “The Prince of Prints”. Katz is well known for his bold, hard-edged figurative paintings and prints.

Included in the exhibition are prints, unique and editioned cutouts on aluminum, and illustrated books – as well as the main attraction, Rush, a unique series of painted life-size cutout heads on aluminum, which the artist gifted to the MFA in 2011. According to the MFA, the exhibition is a celebration of the artist’s promise to the museum of an archive of his editioned prints. The exhibit runs through July 29th in the Gund Gallery.

Comments about the exhibition:

From Sebastian Smee of the Boston Globe:

“Katz may have adopted and perfected advertising’s language of enigmatic simplicity. But he has also transformed it, at his best, into something warm, intimate, and idiosyncratic.”

From MFA.org:

“Katz depicts family members, art-world friends, and Maine landscapes with a cool detachment and a seductive elegance, while walking a tightrope between traditional figuration and pure abstraction.”
